The English Institute of Sport (EIS) is working towards the Foundation Level of the Sport Equality standard, it was announced this week.
The Equality Standard for sport is a framework, launched in 2004, for assisting sports organisations to widen access and reduce inequalities in sport for under-represented individuals, groups and communities, especially women and girls, ethnic minority groups and disabled people.
It is based around two broad themes, developing your organisation and developing your services. There are four levels of achievement; Foundation, Preliminary, Intermediate and Advanced.
For the EIS, representing groups across its staff base, of sport science and medicine, as well as of the athletes it works with, is of primary importance as part of the equality standard framework.
“UK Sport and many of the sports we deliver sport science and medical services to are working through the levels of the equality standard” says Peter Elliott, North Regional Director and lead for EIS’s involvement in the Equality Standard.
“The EIS is committed to equality and diversity across the organisation and believe that progressing through the equality standard framework for sport is an important development for the organisation.”
A review of the current policies and procedures began in July, with EIS staff working towards obtaining the foundation level later this year.
