With three years out from the London Paralympic Games in 2012 marked this weekend, English Institute of Sport's (EIS) Head of Sport Science & Medicine for Paralympic Sport Paul Davies, has accepted an invitation onto the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG’s) Medical Advisory Group.

The Medical Advisory Group will advise on both Olympic and Paralympic medical planning, helping  ensure the right support network is in place for those athletes competing.

Davies’s experience in Paralympic sport made him an ideal candidate for the post, as Dr Richard Budget, Chief Medical Officer at LOCOG and EIS Doctor explains;

“The Medical Advisory Group provides a vehicle for governance and cross reassurance with stakeholders as well as advising LOCOG on medical services for 2012.

"London won the Games with a promise of bringing home the Paralympics and we are benefiting from the help and advice of some of the most experiences and expert doctors and sport scientists from Paralympic Sport in the world. I am very pleased to welcome Paul (Davies) onto the MAG and know we will benefit from his broad experience helping us to more effectively integrate Olympic and Paralympic planning.”

For Davies, the role will sit well with his work in coordinating support services across Paralympic sport at the EIS.

“It is an honour and I am delighted to have been invited to become part of the LOCOG Medical Advisory Group” Davies says. “Having worked within Paralympic sport for a number of years, I hope my experience and specific understanding of sports and their athletes’ requirements will support me in this opportunity.

“Appropriate medical care at a Paralympic games is essential, and it is great to see that LOCOG are integrating both their Olympic and Paralympic medical planning at an early stage. I am sure that LOCOG and EIS will be able to work well together, not just to service the needs of Great Britain’s Paralympic athletes in London, but also to build a legacy of skilled and experienced Medical practitioners that will positively impact upon the performances of Paralympic athletes for many years to come” he adds.
